I've seen a lot of artists going into graphic design programs that think they will be doing "art". If you're into creating original content for say, album covers or apparel design (graphic t-shirts) or things of that nature, graphic design isn't necessarily the best field to pursue. Currently the bulk of job postings for graphic designers are looking wanting people that know Web Design, specifically HTML, Javascript, CSS, and some form of E-Commerce. They is also a huge need for UI/UX and App Developers, which over the past decade is, in my opinion, what the term "graphic designer" has evolved to mean - someone who has an eye for design, but can do a lot of code. There are always places that need layout experts and branding designers (logos, signage, letterhead, etc.) but so many people think they know how to use Photoshop now that they would prefer to do it themselves, even if it's not that good. If you want to make logos, posters, and X-Box packaging, you'd better be damn good or know the right people because those jobs are surprisingly hard to come by. If you can make an app or write up a script that will help amazon.com load products faster and easier, then you'll be golden.
